Distinguished and Famous people from Picton
🏡 Henry Colden Antill
Henry Colden Antill settled at Jarvisfield near Picton in 1825 after military service and work as Governor Macquarie’s aide-de-camp. He later became the district’s resident magistrate and superintendent of police. In 1844 he subdivided land north of Stonequarry Creek, helping create the town of Picton. His career brought together landholding and public authority, characteristic of a colonial society in which influential settlers could shape both settlement and its administration. The local estate provides a specific setting for that history. Antill’s work as a magistrate attracted both praise and criticism, reminding us that the founder’s role was more complicated than the orderly lines of a subdivision plan.
